In the height of summer, our students followed the footsteps of the novel’s protagonists, stepping beyond the pages and into Taichung as it was during the Showa era. Through reading and food, they experienced the cityscape, everyday life, and culinary culture of the time.
In class, students read about the first encounter between Japanese writer Chizuru Aoyama and Taiwanese interpreter Wang Chizuru while enjoying sunflower seeds and tasting Taichung’s traditional ma-ai soup.
To finish, they cooled off with a sweet and refreshing bowl of wan-dou ice, echoing the flavors featured in the novel.
With every bite and every sip, the words on the page seemed to come alive as a “4D” experience—with warmth, aroma, and the authentic taste of Taiwan.
Accustomed to more Western-style foods, many students were initially unfamiliar with these traditional flavors. To everyone's surprise, they loved them!
This was more than simply “reading a book.” Through taste, students discovered the culture, memories, and stories hidden behind the words.
Literature × History × Food
Bringing reading beyond the pages and bringing Taiwan’s stories into the hearts of our students.
