WIST Crowned Robofest World Champion, Showcasing Technological Innovation on the Global Stage

The 2026 Robofest World Robotics Competition, recognized by NASA and IEEE, concluded successfully on May 16 at Lawrence Technological University in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The Taiwan delegation sent a total of 13 teams to compete. Over the course of three days, they faced intense competition among 800 teams and 4,230 top students from 30 countries. The teams delivered outstanding performances, earning 2 championship titles and additional runner-up awards, once again shining a spotlight on Taiwan in the international science and technology arena.
WIST student teams achieved remarkable results in the Senior Creative Competition, winning the World Championship. The students competed with their self-developed robot “Timmy II,” demonstrating outstanding engineering design capabilities, interdisciplinary integration skills, and strong teamwork. Their performance stood out on the global stage and highlighted the exceptional innovation capacity of Taiwanese students in technology.
The award-winning team, “The Connector,” was led by G12 student Henry as captain, with members including G11 students Justin, Tim, Norman, and Eric. Guided by the core concept of “connecting life through technology,” the team aimed to use engineering design to improve everyday needs, ensuring that technology is not only a competition entry but also a meaningful tool for solving real-world problems. Their project “Timmy II” originated from campus life experiences, addressing the distance between the school cafeteria and classrooms. Through an automated delivery system, the robot enhances convenience and demonstrates the practical value of applying technology in daily life.
The team shared that from winning first place in the national selection in Taiwan to competing in the world finals in the United States, the development of “Timmy II” took approximately six weeks of intensive work. Students continuously optimized and adjusted the system during lunch breaks, after school, and other spare time. Rather than being a completely new creation, the project was built upon the first-generation “Timmy,” extending its existing programming framework and sensor systems while further upgrading and refining its capabilities. With prior hands-on experience, the team was able to complete this advanced version within a limited timeframe.
In terms of division of responsibilities, team captain Henry oversaw overall system design and power integration. Justin focused on programming and sensor development, independently building simulation testing systems and exploring new control platforms. Tim, Norman, and Eric contributed to hardware fabrication and mechanical assembly. Beyond functionality, the team also enhanced the robot’s appearance with exterior spray painting and LED lighting, giving the project a more complete and visually engaging technological aesthetic.
To recognize the outstanding achievements of Taiwanese students on the international stage, Economic Officer Lin Ming-Ya and Secretary Chen from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago attended the event in person to show support. They also delivered congratulatory messages on behalf of President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, praising the students for their perseverance, dedication, and talent in bringing honor to Taiwan. Officer Lin also expressed gratitude to the teachers and staff, acknowledging their efforts in guiding students to pursue their dreams despite limited resources and successfully stepping onto the global stage.
