WIST Students Take the International Academic Stage at MIT, Showcasing Their Excellence in Physics Exploration

WIST Grade 12 student Charles, driven by his passion for physics, took the initiative to seek research opportunities beyond the classroom. Together with students from the United States, he formed an international research team and co-authored a research paper titled “Evidence Mapping of OPM-MEG and SQUID-MEG Readiness for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury,” focusing on magnetoencephalography (MEG) technologies. The paper was accepted for presentation at the 2026 IEEE MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (MIT URTC), where Charles was selected to deliver an in-person oral presentation. From October 9 to 11, Charles traveled to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States to present the team's research, marking a significant step from independent exploration in high school to international academic exchange and demonstrating his ability to apply interdisciplinary knowledge through research.

WIST 12年級學生Charles,以對物理學的興趣為出發點,主動尋找課堂之外的研究機會,與美國學生組成跨國研究團隊,共同完成腦磁圖檢測技術相關研究論文〈Evidence Mapping of OPM-MEG and SQUID-MEG Readiness for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury〉,獲2026 IEEE MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference(MIT URTC)接受,並入選實體論文口頭發表。

Charles shared that his learning journey at WIST gradually developed his interest in physics and inspired him to explore how classroom knowledge could be extended into practical research. During the summer, he connected with student research teams and collaborated with American high school and university students to discuss research directions. Through this experience, he expanded his interests into quantum sensors and their applications in biomedical technology. Working with an international team also exposed him to diverse research perspectives and encouraged him to explore the possibilities of combining physics with other academic disciplines.

Throughout the research process, Charles contributed to formulating research questions, conducting and verifying literature reviews, organizing evidence, discussing the research framework, and writing the paper. Together with his teammates, he completed the submission process and prepared for the oral presentation. As team members brought different perspectives to the project, they held multiple online meetings to exchange ideas and integrate their findings. After the paper was accepted, the team had only four to five weeks to prepare for the conference. Despite the time differences, members dedicated their weekends to revising the presentation, refining its content, and repeatedly practicing their delivery to ensure they were ready within the limited timeframe.

The research focused on the applications of two magnetoencephalography technologies—Optically Pumped Magnetometer-based MEG (OPM-MEG) and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device-based MEG (SQUID-MEG)—in the study of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This experience allowed Charles to gain a deeper understanding of the connection between physical sensing technologies and biomedical research. Participating in MIT URTC for the first time gave him valuable exposure to international academic research and presentation standards. Furthermore, the judges' recognition of the research's innovation strengthened his interest in interdisciplinary studies.

Charles emphasized the importance of actively seeking research opportunities. He believes that early access to research resources provides more time to conduct experiments, investigate questions, and validate ideas. This experience has also reinforced his intention to pursue physics as his primary academic field, while continuing to explore applications of quantum sensing, biomedical technology, and other interdisciplinary research areas.

WIST Principal Liu Yi-Hsin stated that learning should extend beyond textbooks. The school is committed to guiding students to explore different fields based on their interests, integrate knowledge, and turn ideas into action. From developing an interest in physics and proactively pursuing research opportunities to collaborating with an international team and presenting at a global academic conference, Charles exemplifies the spirit of independent learning, continuous exploration, and practical research. WIST will continue to provide diverse learning opportunities that help students discover their interests, establish academic directions, and develop research and problem-solving skills. By laying a strong foundation for future academic pursuits, the school hopes to empower students to take their learning beyond the classroom, engage in international collaboration, and broaden their horizons on the global stage.
