Promoting a Dual-Track AP × IB Curriculum: WIST Builds Diverse Pathways to Connect with the World

To help students and parents stay informed about global curriculum trends and strengthen their academic planning, WIST recently hosted an “AP × IB Curriculum Seminar and IB Diploma Programme Information Session.” The event systematically introduced the key features and differences between the two major international curricula, while also providing opportunities for face-to-face discussions between teachers and parents, fostering a deeper understanding of how each pathway influences university applications and long-term academic development.
Principal Liu Yi-Hsin of WIST noted that students often face a critical decision between AP and IB when planning their international academic pathways. Each offers distinct advantages: the AP (Advanced Placement) program provides flexible course selection, allowing students to choose one or multiple subjects based on their interests and abilities, thereby strengthening academic depth in specific fields; in contrast, the IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Programme emphasizes holistic education, requiring students to complete six subject areas and three core components over two years, cultivating critical thinking, research skills, and social awareness.
In terms of AP course planning, students can independently design their study plans according to their academic interests and career aspirations. This allows early exposure to college-level knowledge and the gradual development of specialized expertise. Such flexibility not only deepens subject mastery but also enables students to clearly demonstrate their academic strengths and motivation in university applications—making it especially suitable for those with clear goals or strong subject interests.
The seminar also provided a comprehensive overview of the global competitiveness of the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) in university admissions. All IBDP teachers at WIST have completed official training certified by the International Baccalaureate Organization, ensuring that teaching quality aligns with international standards. The curriculum emphasizes academic rigor and interdisciplinary integration. Through core components such as the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), students develop independent research skills, academic writing proficiency, and self-directed learning habits—laying a strong foundation for higher education worldwide.
WIST’s College Counseling Center emphasized that it will continue to support students through parent seminars, university guidance talks, and personalized counseling services. These initiatives aim to help students choose the most suitable academic pathway based on their individual strengths and aspirations, ensuring a well-structured and confident approach to international university admissions. By advancing a dual-track AP and IB system, WIST empowers students to discover their unique strengths, broaden their opportunities, and confidently engage with the global academic landscape.
